How to Conduct a Sobriety Test

During a routine traffic stop a officer might encounter a intoxicated driver. It is the officers duty to respond appropriately and follow standard operation procedures.
The officer must be alert for the warning signs of an intoxicated driver. The two major signs of an intoxicated driver are slurred speech and the smell of alcohol. Once the officers has reasonable suspicion that the driver is intoxicated the officer informs the driver to exit their vehicle to conduct further investigation. Upon exiting the vehicle the officer conducts the sobriety test which can consist of three different tasks. The horizontal gaze nystagmus, walk and turn, and one leg stand are all the tests that allow the officer analyze the driver to come to the conclusion of their level of intoxication.
